Pumtek
DZi Beads

Origin: Burma
Pumtek, "buried
thunderbolt", beads are important heirloom beads
among the Chin, who live in the Chin Hills of western Myanmar (formerly
Burma)
and the adjacent area of eastern India, where they are called Kuki. The
original beads were
made over 1000 years ago by the Pyu, the builders of the first state in
Burma.
Genuine Pumtek are made on the opalized wood of
the palm Borassus flabellifer.
They will fluoresce under a short-wave UV lamp
The high quality beads you see displayed here are from the early 20th century. They are most probably made by the people of the Payagyi village.
Instead of opalized palm wood the material these beads are made of is
fossilized wood in the form chalcedony. As you can see on the picture, the original form and structure of the wood is preserved in a form of a woody grain.
